Mix Operators
What are Mix Operators?
Mix Operators are the true service providers of JonDonym. They forward the data traffic of the JonDonauts over their servers (Mixes) and receive a volume-dependent compensation from JonDos in exchange.

Who may become a Mix Operator?
In principle, each company and individual may become a Mix Operator, if we can perform a unique identification and certification of the potential Operator.
Which servers are suitable?
The minimum requirement for operating a Mix is a server with a dedicated connection of at least
- 100 MBit/s throughput
- 512 MB RAM
- 5 GB hard disc space and
- 1 GHz processor.
Moreover, we recommend colocation operation.
How much does it cost to run a Mix?
JonDos does not claim any licence costs or other fixed fees for Mix operation. Mix Operators do also get a free support on installing and maintaining the Mixes from JonDos. The main costs for operation are therefore
- the own hours of work and
- the traffic costs for the server claimed by the hosting provider
Which revenues are to expect?
JonDos offers two kinds of accounting models:
- Accounting by transmitted traffic volume
- Accounting by the number of registered users (Flatrate, not implemented yet)
Accounting by traffic volume may be used by all Mix Operators. Thereby, the traffic volume caused by the users on a Cascade is counted by digitally signed proofs. Thereupon, JonDos credits the corresponding volume for all Mix Operators in the Cascade. As, on user side, only the traffic that is transferred to and received from the first Mix is counted, whereas each Mix Operator has to forward approximately the same volume a second time (almost twice the data volume in total), the Operator's own calculation for the price agreement should contain the factor 1.8 - 2.0 (according to our own measurements). The unit for the actually accounted user data traffic is aGB (anonymised GigaBytes). Depending on the concerted price per aGB (typically less than one Euro net), the Mix Operators receive a monetary compensation at end of month.
Moreover, it is planned that each Operator may create flate rates for his Mixes, or may attach himself to existig flat rates. If all Mixes of a Cascade support the same flat rate, end users may surf on the Cascade using this flat rate. At end of month all Mix Operators, that are attached to the same flat rate, get the revenues earned thereby in equal shares (after substraction of an administration fee by JonDos). Current pay Mixes forward 125-300 aGB per month, whereas this traffic is constantly growing.
Each Mix Operator may also decide not to demand any money for some or all of his Mixes from the end users. This neither generates revenues for JonDos, but we nevertheless offer our free support for the Operator.
Who sells access to the end users?
Primarily JonDos herself acts as vendor before the end users. However, also Mix Operators may purchase data volume or flate rate tickets from JonDos in higher amounts for selling or other kinds of propagation.
May I use the service as advertising platform for my products?
In principle, all operators of JonDonym are known and are published on our web sites and in the JAP / JonDo client. Moreover, Mix Operators will get the possibility to advertise their own products on our web sites and in the client program (status line). Thereby thousands of users may be reached.
